Towing Features of the Explorer

The 2021 Explorer can be equipped with either rear-wheel drive with or available Intelligent 4WD. Both the 2.3L EcoBoost® I-4 and 3.3L Hybrid engines come with rear-wheel drive while the 3.0L EcoBoost® V6 engine has Intelligent 4WD.

A Terrain Management System™ is standard on the Platinum and ST trims, and available on all others. This system allows the driver to adjust the traction to accommodate a myriad of conditions like trail driving, deep snow or sand, slippery streets, and more. It also comes with a selectable Tow/Haul mode that diverts power where it's needed to help when you have a load in tow.

More towing features are included for the Explorer, such as AdvanceTrac®. This offers Roll Stability Control™ and trailer sway control, which adjusts the engine power to maintain control of your trailer. It also helps to slow down your Explorer if you're traveling too fast on a curve.

Ford Explorer Safety Features

To help keep you and your load safe on the road, every trim of the Explorer is outfitted with Ford Co-Pilot360™, a suite of driver-assistance technologies that are beneficial for towing.

This suite of driving aids includes:

  • Pre-Collision Assist with Automatic Emergency Braking
  • BLIS® (Blind Spot Information System) with Cross-Traffic Alert
  • Lane-Keeping System
  • Auto High-Beam Headlamps
  • Rear View Camera

The BLIS® includes trailer coverage, which gives you more visibility of the load behind you, and lets you know when someone is beside your trailer.
