When shopping for an SUV, many people are looking to tow a boat, trailer, or camper, so it's important to know how much a vehicle can safely tow. Along with the rest of Ford's many capable towing vehicles, the Explorer can fulfill your recreational needs.

Drivers in Mechanicsburg, Harrisburg, and Carlisle can learn about the different powertrain options and respective tow ratings in our 2020 Ford Explorer towing capacity guide below.

2020 Explorer Maximum Towing

There are three available powertrains for the Ford Explorer, all of which have varying towing capacities. The Class III Trailer Tow Package also increases its capability, plus includes a hitch receiver, 7-/4-pin wiring harness, and towing technologies.

A 2.3-liter EcoBoost® 4-cylinder engine comes standard and produces 300 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque. This gives you a towing capacity of 3,000 pounds. However, with the Class III Trailer Tow Package, this can be elevated to an impressive 5,300 pounds.

The available 3.0-liter EcoBoost® V6 produces up to 400 horsepower and 415 lb-ft of torque on the ST trim (and 365 horsepower and 380 lb-ft torque on the Platinum). This powertrain comes standard with the Class III Trailer Tow Package, giving you optimal capability with its whopping 5,600-pound towing capacity.

The last engine in the lineup is a 3.3-liter Hybrid. This engine allows you to drive over 500 miles on one tank of gas, but it also gives you enough power to tow what you need. When equipped with the Class III Trailer Tow Package, you'll be able to haul up to 5,000 pounds.

Within those parameters, the 2020 Ford Explorer towing capacity is capable of safely towing a small camper, boat, or flatbed loaded with ATVs.

Towing Features of the Explorer

The 2020 Explorer is also equipped with Intelligent 4WD (4-wheel drive) with a Terrain Management System™. This allows the driver to adjust the system to accommodate a myriad of conditions like trail driving, deep snow or sand, slippery streets, and more. However, it also comes with a selectable tow/haul mode that amps up the power where it's needed to help when you have a load in tow.

More towing features are included for the Explorer, such as AdvanceTrac®. This offers Roll Stability Control™ and trailer sway control, which adjusts the engine power to maintain control of your trailer.

Another handy feature that comes standard in the Class III Trailer Tow Package is BLIS® (Blind Spot Information System) with Trailer Coverage. This gives you more visibility of the load behind you and lets you know when someone is beside your trailer.

Ford Explorer Safety Features

To keep you and your load safe on the road, every trim of the Explorer is outfitted with Ford Co-Pilot360™, several driver-assistance technologies that are beneficial for towing. All of these features aid in safely passing, merging, and maneuvering through the streets with your Explorer and trailer.

This suite of driving aids includes:

  • Automatic Emergency Braking with Pre-Collision Assist
  • BLIS® with Cross-Traffic Alert
  • Lane Keeping System
  • Auto High-Beam Headlamps
  • Rear View Camera
