The trucks we buy represent twin investments of trust. Firstly, before making our purchase, we must be sure that our truck of choice is worth the money we're being asked to pay. Secondly, we must be able to trust it to perform in all sorts of punishing conditions without letting us down. Research and reputation are key. Vehicle comparisons are a viable way of assuring that our trust is well-placed and deserved.Â
History
Ford's F-Series trucks debuted in 1948 and have been in constant production ever since. Of the series, the F-150 is the best-selling variant, with more than 33,000,000 sold as of June 2013. It has enjoyed the highest sales figures of any vehicle in the United States for more than three decades (The much-trumpeted Camry is only the best-selling car.). The F-150 has enjoyed the highest sales figures of any pickup truck for more than four decades. As of the 2014 model year, F-150 is in its twelfth generation.ÂRam is a relative newcomer to the market, having been rebadged in 2010 (before that, Ram comprised an element within the Dodge light truck lineup). Antecedent models were first manufactured by Chrysler Group LLC in 1981, so the F-150 has held the title of America's best-selling pickup truck since before the Dodge Ram 1500 was even manufactured.Â

Trim OptionsÂ
Even Ford's entry-level truck is available in nine trim levels (XL, STX, XLT, FX, Lariat, King Ranch, Raptor, Platinum, and Limited). There are three cab configurations, three bed lengths, and a choice across the range between two-wheel and four-wheel drive. With such an array of choices, any buyer can be assured there's a combination of features to suit their specific purposes.Â
Drivetrain FeaturesÂ
The F-150 is available with a choice of three engine variants:
- 3.7-liter V6 Ti-VCT FFV -- This is an all-new design featuring twin independent variable camshaft timing (the "Ti-VCT"). This feature automatically adjusts both intake and exhaust performance, delivering in real life the wish-list combination of added power with enhanced efficiency.
- 3.7-liter V6 EcoBoost -- This is a proven commodity with in excess of 400,000 EcoBoost-equipped F-150s sold and still in service.
- 5.0-liter V8 FFV, 8-cylinder -- This engine is capable of meeting any job-site or hauling challenge. It is also equipped with Ti-VCT and is now flex-fuel capableÂ
The Ram 1500 is only available in two gas-powered variants (although there is a diesel option):
- 3.6-liter Pentastar V6
- 5.7-liter HEMI V8Â
Technical AspectsÂ
Ford has done a spectacular job of keeping their brand at the forefront of technological advancement. All new for 2014 are:
- Hill-descent control
- MyFord Touch infotainment interface
- Xenon headlightsÂ
Price Points
Ford's base model, the F-150 XL with a regular cab; a six-foot, six-inch bed; and a 3.7-liter engine, comes in at an MSRP (Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price) of $26,725. At the far end of the spectrum, the super-lux Limited SuperCrew, with twin-turbo and 4x4 drivetrain, opens at $50,083.Â
The Ram 1500's 2-door Tradesman is stickered at $24,195; the Laramie Longhorn Edition with no optional equipment starts out at $49,325.
In ConclusionÂ
Both the F-150 and the Ram 1500 are conceived as rugged, no-frills workhorses, and both are well-appointed and versatile in their current incarnations. The Ford, however, manages to translate those heavy-duty capabilities -- so cherished by ranchers and contractors -- into a stylish and refined ride comparable with many luxury-brand sedans.Â
