In the category of affordable compact SUVs, the Ford Escape and Honda CR-V are often discussed. If you've been looking at either of these vehicles, it's important to understand their similarities and differences to see which one comes out on top. To help you out, we're going to review each and then present you with a Ford Escape vs. Honda CR-V comparison.
Ford Escape
The Ford Escape starts with a very nice 4-cylinder engine that performs very well. If you really want some power, though, you can upgrade to either a 1.6L or 2.0L EcoBoost engine. Stick with the base model and you'll achieve a fuel economy of 22 mpg in the city and 31 mpg on the highway. Decide on an EcoBoost engine and that only drops by a mile or two. Add to that great handling and a smooth ride, and you have a vehicle that is extremely fun to drive.
Appearance-wise, the Ford Escape is pretty awesome. Outside, it's a sturdy vehicle with some great curves. Inside, you''ll find high-quality materials and a fantastic design. Cargo space could be a little better, but the cabin itself offers plenty of leg room and head room for both the driver and passengers. Plus, you get a huge amount of standard features like Bluetooth connectivity, a backup camera, and the voice-command Sync with MyFord system. While some have noted that the MyFord system can be a bit glitchy, most drivers won't have a problem with it at all.Â
Honda CR-V
As you might expect from the popular Honda CR-V, this vehicle performs very well, thanks to a 4-cylinder engine that delivers a nice amount of acceleration. Unfortunately, there aren't any more powerful engine options, but many drivers probably won't mind. Fuel economy is rated at 23 mpg in the city and 31 mpg on the highway, which is good for the class. And its 5-speed automatic transmission is responsive and shifts quite smoothly.
The exterior of the CR-V is the same great quality that drivers expect from Honda. The interior is quite roomy, but some of the materials inside aren't of the highest quality. However, there's plenty of cargo space, which is definitely a plus. For features, you're looking at a standard 4-speaker audio system, Bluetooth connectivity, and a few others. Special options include leather upholstery, 7-speaker audio system, heated front seats, sunroof, and satellite radio.
Ford Escape vs. Honda CR-V
As far as compact SUVs go, the Escape and CR-V are both quite respectable. They both perform well, offer a number of extras, and have plenty of space. Where they differ has more to do with the minute details. For example, the Ford Escape has more engine choices, allowing a driver to select something more powerful if that's what they're interested in. The Honda CR-V does get a little better gas mileage and has a somewhat larger cargo area, but these are negligible. Both vehicles seem pretty great, but in a side-by-side Ford Escape vs. Honda CR-V comparison, the Escape would win out, if only that it offers a more enjoyable driving experience.
