Having not even finished grade school, career options were limited to young Milton Hershey, a resident of mid Pennsylvania. Â After an internship with a Lancaster candy maker, he set out on his own and started a series of candy companies in the East and Midwest at which the results were less than sweet. The fourth time was the charm for Hershey when he started the Lancaster Caramel Company, which was an immediate success. Â He operated it for several years and sold out when he became fascinated with the business of making milk chocolate. Â As they say, the rest is history, and Hershey went on to build the world's largest chocolate factory, and with it, a model town for his employees.Â
Hershey felt a deep sense of morality and benevolence towards
his employees, and the town he built reflected his feelings, with affordable
homes, inexpensive public transportation, quality schools, and a host of
cultural amenities.
A dozen miles east of Harrisburg, today, Hershey is a premier tourist destination in Pennsylvania, with visitors coming to a greatly expanded, chocolate-themed attraction that Milton Hershey started building in 1907.
Over the decades, many residents of the Hershey area commuted to Harrisburg industries for work, or were engaged in the area's agricultural and dairy industries, and any of these vocations required reliable transportation, for which the people of Hershey have come to rely on Fred Beans Ford in nearby Mechanicsburg.
