The days of building design models out of clay or steel have been traded in by Ford for virtual reality technology. Ford has been testing Microsoft HoloLens mixed reality technology which gains them speed in designing more stylish vehicles.
Ford designers have been working for over a year with the Microsoft HoloLens technology which allows them to see virtual design elements as if they were part of the physical vehicle. Elements like side mirrors, grilles, vehicle interiors can been quickly looked at and changed in just seconds. Different shapes, sizes and textures of future vehicle attributes can be explored easily.
“It’s amazing we can combine the old and the new – clay models and holograms – in a way that both saves time and allows designers to experiment and iterate quickly to dream up even more stylish, clever vehicles,” says Jim Holland, Ford vice president, vehicle component and systems engineering. “Microsoft HoloLens is a powerful tool for designers as we continue to reimagine vehicles and mobility experiences in fast-changing times.”
