Despite the auto industry's lip-service to all matters Green, the hybrid sedan's still a fairly rare beast. Drivers wanting plush without pricey previously found the market even more limited. With the arrival of the 2014 Ford Fusion Hybrid, however, they were given an almost faultless option.

First and foremost, fuel economy
It's what the hybrid's all about. This midsize machine features a 2.0-liter, four-cylinder engine across all trim levels, backed up by an electric motor twinned to lithium-ion batteries. The unit sends 188 horsepower to a front-wheel-drive, continuously variable transmission. It's a combination which quite reasonably crows over
achieving 47 mpg in all three cycles
(city, highway, and combined). With Toyota Camry's best hybrid offering only realizing a combined 41 mpg, that's an impressive number.

Curtain Raisers
The 2014 Ford Fusion Hybrid is also stuffed with enough safety features, high-tech toys and luxurious details to delight any driver. The designers and engineers have managed to balance styling, character and content with sturdy, responsive road handling.

The entry-level S model comes with a suggested pricetag of $26,200, sporting standard features that include 17-inch alloys, antilock disc brakes, automatic headlights, Bluetooth, cruise control, dual-zone automatic climate control, iPod input, front knee and side/curtain airbags, and stability and traction control.

Parents of teens will be pleased to learn that all 2014 Ford Fusion Hybrid trim levels come with the factory's 'MyKey' feature -- which can be set to determine certain driving parameters -- as standard. It's hard to see how the base trim could be beaten for the money.

At the other end of the spectrum, the Titanium model, offered at $32,500, comes with color-keyed rocker moldings, an eight-way power driver seat, heated mirrors, a keyless entry keypad, remote start, and HD satellite radio bellowing through an upgraded Sony 12-speaker audio system.

Verdict

Midsize sedan fuel economy is nicely balanced with big car technology and passenger comfort. The lithium-ion batteries take up far less trunk space than was typical of earlier-generation hybrids, occupying only four cubic feet of the 16 offered by a Fusion equipped with a standard powerplant. Rear seat fold-down still affords tremendous cargo capacity for the size of the vehicle.

Standard features, driver-assist technology, and option packages are second-to-none in the midsize car bracket. With its impressive refinement, well-rounded performance and high-tech features, the 2014 Ford Fusion Hybrid puts Ford at the top of the hybrid sedan class.
