The advent of the car-SUV crossover vehicle brought with it options like increased fuel economy and better handling. Nowadays, it is rare to see a full-size, body-on-frame behemoth like the Expedition roaming the highway and byways of this great land. However, they are still rolling off the production line at automakers like Ford, Chevy, Dodge, and even Toyota, and there are still families that flock to them for the things they do so well.
What's New in 2014
The 2014 Ford Expedition remains largely unchanged from last year. Most notable among the new features is a change in the rear load-leveling system. In previous years, this had been handled by a noisy air suspension system. In 2014, that is replaced by a much quieter mechanical system.
Otherwise, the Expedition is pretty much the same package that it has been in recent years. It comes in XLT, XLT EL, Limited, Limited EL, King Ranch, or King Ranch EL versions. The EL indicates that it is slightly longer than the standard trim level by about 15 inches.
Powertrain & Towing Capacity
While the 2014 Ford Expedition features some of the weaker engine options in the segment, it surprisingly features the highest tow rating of any others in the segment. The single overhead cam 5.4L Flex Fuel V8 engine offers a tradeoff for buyers who are still concerned about fuel economy from their full-sized SUV. The 2014 Ford Expedition returns an EPA-estimated 12 mpg city and 17 mpg highway, which comes in on the high end for SUVs in this segment.
The V8 produces 310 horsepower, and runs on either unleaded or E85 fuel. A six-speed automatic transmission is standard. The 2014 Ford Expedition comes either in rear-wheel drive or four-wheel drive configurations.

Overall Impressions
While the 2014 Ford Expedition may have one of the weaker engines in its class,
it never feels underpowered. The independent rear suspension also helps keep
the rear-end under control, even when carrying lots of rear-end cargo. The
parking sensors, rearview camera, and integrated blind-zone mirrors make the
Expedition much easier to navigate in an urban setting. The interior is nice
and quiet, even on the highway. Though steering and handling are as expected
for a vehicle of the 2014 Ford Expedition's size, it is not as rough as it is
in others in this segment.Â
