2013 Ford Taurus SEL Reviewed

The Ford Taurus was introduced in the mid 1980s as the "new wave" in domestic sedans. While it suffered many design and manufacturing problems throughout the 1990s, the Taurus has continued to be a good seller, due to its lush and modern interior. Leather seats are standard, the seats are exceptionally plush, and effort is taken to make the ride very smooth and the air conditioning and heating very effective. The current 6th generation Taurus, first brought to market in 2010, continues this trend, being slightly larger than its predecessors and competitive in price. It is a solid commuter vehicle.

The primary focus of the Ford Taurus has been to make it an affordable "first car" or "small family car," and the current Taurus is certainly that. While the new 2013 Ford Taurus sees a new "refreshed" exterior and interior, it is still cheaper than the Volkswagen Passat or any other German sedan, while slightly more expensive than what Toyota and Kia have on offer.

Its 237 hp engine may imply power and speed, but its very heavy weight and large size ensure that it is not suitable for track days, only avoiding accidents and passing slow moving trucks. It has an excellent safety record, receiving the highest or next to highest safety rating in all areas.

The SEL model is the "mid-range" edition of the car, having some but not all of the optional upgrades. It comes with an automatic transmission as standard, however the transmission is a sequential gearbox and can be made "manual" by use of the paddle shifters installed on the wheel.

Sirius satellite radio, dashboard touch screen and built-in GPS are standard in this edition, along with enhanced speakers. While not as plush as a Buick or BMW, the leather interior is high quality and very comfortable. Thus, the SEL model is the mid-range model of a mid-range model, making it a very good option for those who want more than a cheap commuter vehicle but do not want to shell out for a luxury sedan.
