2018 Ford Explorer Review

The newest generation of the Ford Explorer combined a rugged, truck-like appeal with car-like road manners and enough creature comforts for a daily family commuter. For the 2018 model year, the Explorer sticks with what works, with only a few minor improvements to its reliable design.

In this review, we'll show you some of the new features and updates that come with this full-size SUV. We'll look at the power and performance, the updated design, and the new technology features.  Drivers in Mechanicsburg, Harrisburg, and Carlisle can learn more about the 2018 Ford Explorer from the team at Fred Beans Ford of Mechanicsburg.

2018 Ford Explorer Power & Performance

Always known for its versatility, the 2018 Ford Explorer can be outfitted with one of several engines. The base models have a 290-horsepower 3.5L V6 that produces 255 lb-ft of torque, or an optional 280-horsepower 2.3L turbo-4 that produces 310 lb-ft of torque. There's also a 3.5L EcoBoost® V6 option that produces 365 horsepower and 350 lb-ft of torque.

Stiff suspension tuning, precise steering, and effortless low-end torque give the Explorer the perfect blend of power and drivability. It has the agility to take on the tight turns, the boost for quick passing, and the composure to ensure that it never feels unstable.

All-wheel drive with a 4-position Terrain Management System is available. This allows it to adapt to the conditions as needed, including modes like Mud/Ruts, Sand and Grass, and Grass/Gravel/Snow for inclement weather or off-roading. The Ford Explorer can also be equipped to tow up to 5,000 pounds, which dramatically outperforms other vehicles in this class.

Explorer Cargo Space

With a total cargo capacity of 81.7 cubic feet, the 2018 Ford Explorer has enough space to haul all your stuff. Behind the third row sits a deep cargo well with plenty of additional space for extra items. Deep door pockets, anti-tip cup holders, and an enormous center console bin ensure that there's plenty of space within the cabin as well.

To adjust the cabin for more space, second-row captain's chairs can be swapped for the standard bench. In addition to reclining, these seats can slide fore and aft to allow more space in the cargo bay or in the third row.

New Technology Features

Tech-savvy drivers will love the new features in the 2018 Ford Explorer. Staying connected has never been easier, thanks to the 4G modem and the new Wi-Fi hotspot that allows for 10 devices to connect to the network within a range of 50 feet. The SYNC® 3 system, still in effect, will provide easy access through its touchscreen and voice-recognition capabilities.

Drivers can opt for the Ford Safe and Smart™ package, which adds a whole slew of driver-assisting technology features to the Ford Explorer. This package features automatic high beams, Lane-Keeping System, Cross-Traffic Alert, and the Blind Spot Information System. Drivers will also enjoy Adaptive Cruise Control and Collision Warning with Brake Support, a feature that lets you set your speed and even a distance from the vehicle ahead. This distance will be maintained despite slowing traffic, not needing driver interaction for the vehicle to avoid a collision.

Staying in Touch

Without compromising its rugged utility roots, the 2018 Ford Explorer added the necessary comfort and manners to its package to become the perfect all-around crossover.
